Nick Saban’s contract extension has been made official by the Compensation Committee of the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees.

The university announced in early June that it had reached an agreement with Saban.  The deal means that Coach Saban is expected to remain at Alabama through the 2028 season.

That news is certainly welcomed by all Alabama fans and the administration. The rest of the SEC and college football world may not be so thrilled.

Alabama football has dominated college football’s best conference and under Saban’s tenure. There is no reason to expect that to change.

Saban has amassed 170 wins against just 23 losses in his 14 seasons with the Crimson Tide.

He has guided Alabama to an unprecedented six national titles during his run. His seven total titles make him the all-time leader, one ahead of Alabama legend Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Saban’s base salary will remain at $275,000. His talent fee for the 2020-21 season was $8.425 million and will increase by $400,000 annually, reaching $11.225 million in the final year of the contract. Saban will also earn a $800,000 completion benefit each year at the end of the season.

The contract puts him on pace to be the first college football coach to surpass $10 million annually. That will happen in the 2023-24 season.

It’s a staggering amount of money. He’s also worth every penny.
