Alabama Football Reels in Top Talent

The Alabama Crimson Tide’s recruiting momentum continues under Head Coach Kalen DeBoer. The team recently secured a commitment from in-state standout wide receiver Derick Smith. Smith’s national ranking (51st overall, 6th WR) makes this a significant acquisition. Notably, Smith chose Alabama over regional rivals Georgia and Auburn.

Smith has played on both sides of the ball, and is listed as an ATH (athlete) by most recruiting services. He amassed over 2,500 total yards and 23 total touchdowns offense, while and adding 74 tackles, 15 TFLs & 11 sacks on defense.

This addition, combined with Zymear Smith’s earlier commitment, elevates Alabama’s 2025 recruiting class to 13th in the nation. DeBoer has also impressed with his in-state recruiting prowess, securing commitments from four of the top 15 prospects from Alabama.

Jamarcus Shephard, the newly appointed wide receivers coach, is proving to be a valuable asset. Three of his former players are projected as high selections in the upcoming NFL draft, adding significant weight to his recruiting pitches for top receiver talent. Given Shephard’s likely high demand from other programs, Alabama should appreciate his expertise.

Looking ahead, Alabama remains in contention for several top prospects in the 2025 class. These include highly-rated athletes like Quanell Farrakhan Jr., Luke Metz, and Darrell Johnson, all considered four-star recruits.

DeBoer Exceeds Initial Expectations

Initially, some questioned DeBoer’s ability to attract elite recruits to Alabama. However, within a few months, he has silenced those doubts by securing key in-state and national commitments, while also demonstrating success in the transfer portal.

The 2025 recruiting class will be DeBoer’s first complete cycle, offering a comprehensive evaluation of his recruiting skills. Based on his early achievements, there appears to be little reason for concern. DeBoer boasts a proven track record of winning with less-talented rosters, and Alabama provides him with a significant talent advantage.
