Charlie Strong has joined the Alabama Crimson Tide coaching staff as a defensive analyst. Strong visited with Nick Saban last week on the Alabama campus. The meeting caused much excitement among Alabama fans, many hoping that the defensive expert would join the Alabama staff in some capacity.

Strong is the latest former head coach to be hired by Alabama as either an assistant or analyst. Among the notables are: Butch Jones, Major Applewhite, Lane Kiffin, Mike Locksley, Kyle Flood, and current offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian.

Strong formerly held the head coaching position at Louisville, Texas and South Florida. Several other SEC schools had expressed interest in hiring Strong in a coordinator and/or analyst role since his ouster at South Florida following the 2019 season. Among those are Florida, where Strong helped Urban Myer win the national championship as his defensive coordinator in 2006 and 2008.
The hiring is a shot in the arm for an Alabama defense which played well below what has come to be expected in Tuscaloosa.
