Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban gave his thoughts Thursday on how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting the 2020 college football season.
Saban answered questions during a media press conference about the team is dealing with the situation now, and the plans they have as the season approaches.
He stopped short of predicting whether football will be played this year.
“I never really answer hypothetical questions,” said Saban. “I’m sure that everybody’s going to want me to speculate on what’s going to happen in the future, and nobody really knows. It’s very uncertain. It’s uncertain times.
“I think we have to fight through the process of what we need to do on a day to day basis to make good choices and decisions, to the right thing at the right time regardless of the circumstance.”
Daily meetings are taking place between Saban and his staff using video chat technology. The players are also working out regularly. The players are wearing Apple watches and their progress is being monitored by the strength and conditioning staff.
Video is also being used to with the player, allowing coached to hone their technique.
All teams missed most if not all of spring practice. An extended fall camp has been floated as an idea by some to make sure that the teams are ready for the season. Saban has another idea.
“If you look at statistics historically on concussions, injuries … the most concentrated time that you practice and not play is in fall camp,” Saban said during the conference call. “You have more practices, you have to spend more time on the field. So I don’t know that increasing that is going to be beneficial in getting people ready to play.”
“I think if you could do simulated training programs in the summertime that wouldn’t involve that much contact, or even any contact, that would be just as beneficial at that point.”
